In the world of Wuyi rock oolong, location is everything.

Niulan Keng (牛栏坑) is one of three valleys that define the highest tier of Wuyi terroir -- steep walls, mineral-rich soil, and a microclimate that produces a character no other location can replicate. Rougui (肉桂) grown here doesn't just smell like cinnamon. It carries the rock beneath it: a deep mineral backbone that arrives mid-sip and stays.

This is what serious Wuyi tea drinkers mean when they say "rock rhyme" (岩韵). You'll know it when you feel it.

What's in the cup

Rougui (肉桂) is a Wuyi cultivar known for its sharp, spicy cinnamon fragrance -- one of the most distinctive profiles in Chinese oolong. From Niulan Keng specifically, that spice is accompanied by something heavier and more grounding: the mineral depth of the rock itself, absorbed through decades of growth in this exact valley.

The dry leaf is dark and tightly rolled, with the characteristic roasted complexity of traditional Wuyi processing. What brews out is amber-red and full -- a cup with weight and presence from the first steep to the last.

Good for

— Stressed, overwhelmed -- this is a tea that commands attention; it pulls you into the present

— Can't focus -- the intensity of the rock rhyme finish is its own kind of anchor

— Emotionally flat -- nothing about this tea is passive; it has enough character to shift a mood

— Exhausted -- traditional roast oolong carries a sustained warmth that lasts

Tasting notes

— Fragrance: sharp cinnamon, roasted wood, mineral

— Liquor: deep amber-red, clear and full

— Sip: bold, round, no bitterness

— Mid-sip: mineral rock rhyme arrives and settles in the throat

— Finish: long, warming, lingers well past the cup

— Resteepable: consistent depth across many rounds

Steeps 1 onward: pour and drain within 10--20 seconds

The rock rhyme deepens from the third steep. Don't rush past it.
