If your mind is running too fast, this is the tea for that.

Not because it sedates. Because it does the opposite of scatter. Longjing carries L-theanine alongside its caffeine -- a combination that creates a particular kind of alert calm. Awake, but not wired. Present, but not pressured. The kind of focus that feels like it came from inside rather than forced from outside.

This is what a good cup of West Lake Longjing does on a day when everything feels like too much.

What's in the cup

Longjing (龙井) from the West Lake production area, Hangzhou -- the origin and benchmark of this tea. Pre-Qingming first flush: the narrowest harvest window of the year, before April 5th, when the buds have spent all winter accumulating and haven't yet given anything away. Tender, dense, and carrying a sweetness that later harvests don't replicate.

The leaves are pan-fired by hand and pressed flat -- this is what locks in the toasted, warm fragrance and creates that distinctive flat profile you'll recognize the moment you open the tin.

Good for

— Stressed, overwhelmed -- the L-theanine and gentle caffeine work together, not against you

— Can't focus -- a clean, present cup without the jitter of coffee

— Exhausted but need to keep going -- steady energy, not a spike

— Digestive discomfort -- green tea supports digestion gently, especially between meals

Tasting notes

— Fragrance: toasted bean, warm chestnut, fresh green

— Liquor: clear pale yellow-green, luminous

— Sip: fresh, smooth, naturally sweet, no astringency

— Finish: clean and lingering

— Resteepable: consistent across multiple rounds

Harvest & details

— Harvest: 2026, pre-Qingming first flush

— Origin: West Lake production area (西湖产区), Hangzhou, Zhejiang

— Style: Longjing (龙井), pan-fired, hand-pressed flat

— Grade: first flush, whole bud and leaf

How to brew

Water temperature: 175–185°F (80–85°C) -- never boiling

Use a glass: watching the flat leaves stand upright before slowly settling is one of the quiet pleasures of this tea

Leaf ratio: 3g per 300ml

First steep: 60–90 seconds. Add 20 seconds each round.

The first steep is fresh. The second is rounder. The third is quiet and sweet. All three are worth it.
